How GenAI Has Become Part of Our Professional Lives

Generative Artificial Intelligence has conquered the Swiss workplace and has now become an integral part of many companies. This is shown by the AI Barometer Study 2025.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (generative AI, or GenAI in English) refers to a type of AI systems that can independently create new content, rather than just being based on predetermined data. This technology uses complex algorithms and models to recognize patterns from extensive data sets and create original content based on them.

What is Generative AI?

The main difference between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) lies in their respective goals and applications. AI uses existing data to analyze problems and make decisions, while generative AI creates new content that is not directly derived from existing data.

How is this complex artificial intelligence already being applied in Swiss companies? And what is the attitude of Swiss employees toward this technology? ZHAW, in collaboration with VOICETECHHUB, investigated these questions in the AI Barometer Study 2025.

The key findings:

  1. Familiarity and Usage: 67 percent of respondents are familiar with Generative AI, and 80 percent have already gained personal experience. Already 43 percent of Swiss employees use these technologies daily in a professional context.
  2. Looking to the Future: 98 percent of respondents plan to continue using Generative AI. They view the technology as productivity-enhancing (85 percent) and useful for everyday life (83 percent).
  3. Versatile Applications: AI solutions are particularly well-suited for text generation (85 percent), personalized content (79 percent), as well as multilingual communication and translations (78 percent).
  4. Challenges: Topics of reliability and security are viewed critically. While 68 percent find Generative AI helpful, only 40 percent are convinced of its reliability. Even fewer consider it trustworthy (21 percent) and secure (20 percent).
  5. Motivation and Learning Effort: The use of Generative AI is often associated with fun (80 percent) and entertainment (61 percent). Additionally, 79 percent find learning to use it easy.

Generative AI Has Secured Its Place in Swiss Daily Work Life

These results highlight the increasing awareness and widespread use of Generative AI in the Swiss economy. «It has long been more than a short-term trend and is developing into a permanent component of digital everyday life,» emphasizes Gioia Volkmar from ZHAW.

AI Barometer Study 2025

The study is based on an online survey of around 140 companies from Switzerland. The majority work in the areas of marketing (20 percent), IT/technology (14 percent), and research & development (13 percent). The company sizes range from small businesses (1-10 employees, 9 percent) to large companies with over 1,000 employees (39 percent). The implementation of the study was made possible through the support of numerous sponsors and research partners, including Swiss Engineering STV, HANDELSVERBAND.swiss, Angestellte Schweiz, CSS, Baloise Holding AG, City of Gossau, DPD (Switzerland) AG, St. Galler Kantonalbank, and Webrepublic.

Generative AI – What's Next?

For companies to fully exploit the potential of generative AI, the study recommends clear responsibilities, transparent communication, continuous training, and a cultural change that promotes long-term innovation enthusiasm.
