One in 7 people changed jobs in 2023

Job mobility is currently high. You need to bear this in mind when you sign a new employment contract.

In Switzerland, 14.7% of people in employment changed jobs between 2022 and 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Mobility is particularly pronounced among young people and people without children. Almost one in four employed people aged between 15 and 24 (23.8%) changed jobs between 2022 and 2023.

Young and childless people change jobs faster

Among 25 to 39-year-olds, employees without children in the household changed jobs more frequently than those with child(ren).

On average, employees changed jobs after 5.6 years.

Are you one of these 15% with a new job?

The following things need to be done before your last day at work:

Resign correctly

  • Resign from your old job, ideally in writing by letter.
    • Make sure you resign from your current job on time. The date on which your employer receives your notice is decisive.

Inform work colleagues and contacts

  • Notify everyone affected by your job change, from superiors to suppliers and business partners.

Request a job reference

  • Ask for a reference
    • You are entitled to a written reference. Request this in good time.
    • The reference must describe the employment relationship fully and truthfully and provide a favourable assessment.

Reduce holiday

  • Reduce your holiday entitlement
    • If possible, you must have used up all your holiday entitlement by your termination date.
    • Discuss the exact date with your line manager.
    • Your boss can refuse to allow you to take holiday days if he/she is dependent on your work performance for operational reasons. In this case, these holiday days must be paid out to you.

Return work materials cleanly

  • Hand in everything that does not belong to you.
  • Tidy up your PC
    • Make sure that all work data on the PC or server is neatly stored.
    • Only delete business data with your employer's consent.

Change pension fund correctly

  • Check the pension fund
    • Your old employer will deregister you from the old pension fund and your new employer will register you with the new one.

Stay in good memory

  • Make sure you are remembered positively
    • Stay committed to your job until your last day at work.
    • Familiarise your successor well.
    • Keep company secrets to yourself.
  • Ask for a final interview
