Job Crafting

Is your work extremely interesting or rather monotonous? In every job, no matter how interesting or uninteresting it may be, what matters is what you make of it and what meaning you give it, says Professor Amy Wrzesniewski. You can start today.

Job crafting refers to actively shaping your own work. The term ‘job crafting’ was coined by Amy Wrzesniewski and Jane Dutton in the 2000s and describes how employees specifically adapt tasks, social relationships or their own view of the job in order to experience more meaning, motivation and fit.

The interesting thing about this concept is that job crafting takes place within the current job and does not require a change of job.

We can distinguish between three forms:

  1. Task crafting (adjusting tasks)
  2. Relationship crafting (shaping collaboration) and
  3. Cognitive crafting (changing your inner attitude towards work).

How you can get started

Regularly reflect on which activities give you energy or drain you, and identify your strengths. You should openly discuss small adjustments with your manager – such as different priorities or new responsibilities that you would like to take on.

Practical tip

Start with one small change per week. Even small steps can have an impact.

  1. Reflection (What gives me energy, what drags me down?)
  2. Choose a specific mini change (a task, a relationship, a perspective)
  3. Discuss with your manager (short conversation, clarify expectations)
  4. Review (what worked, what didn't, adjustments)
